From the early days of East London College, teaching staff included both male and female members. However, women lecturers were in the minority, especially in the Sciences. Women mainly taught in the Arts Department, and included Professor Mina Perry (née Paquier), who was French Lecturer at East London College, as well as teaching at Westfield College.

Although women were in the minority in the Sciences, both as teachers and as students, at East London College, some women did succeed in their scientific studies. Miss Whincop (below right, pictured in the first row, first on right) earned a first in Chemistry in 1920. She was the only female student to complete the degree successfully in her year.
